What are the first three things that come to your mind when you think of Madrid? Tapas is definitely one of them! Everyone knows that Madrid is famous for its tapas, which are defined as a “small amount of food that is served with a drink.”
As an Erasmus student, I want to live my Madrid experience to the fullest. I want to make the most of my stay in the city and to discover the best places to get tapas and drinks.
Below are my top three favorite places.
1) If you are looking for a typical Spanish bar in the heart of the city, El Museo del Jamón (http://www.museodeljamon.com/) is certainly the place to go. The restaurant literally looks like a “pork butcher shop museum” displaying large varieties of ham all around the place. What I most like about El Museo del Jamón is the fact that it has a very local feel, because tourists are not familiar with it. This gives it a lot of authenticity and it makes you feel like a true Spaniard.
2) Near the metro station Puerta del Ángel, I found a really cool bar called La Esquina de Eusebio (Calle de Caramuel, 16, 28011 Madrid). The bar was named after its owner Eusebio, a friendly Portuguese man that started his business 17 years ago. This place looks like a bar in old Western movies, which gives it a charming atmosphere. The menu contains a big variety of tapas, and if you buy a drink, you can pick some for free. This bar is one of my favorites because it is good food at a decent price range.
3) If you happen to pass by Gran Via, known as one of Madrid’s most famous streets, I strongly recommend you to visit Mercado de la Reina (http://grupomercadodelareina.com/es/mercado-de-la-reina/). This is a place that offers both delicious and well-presented tapas, and also different meals at a good price. The bar/restaurant has a chic and modern atmosphere, and the staff and owner are very welcoming.
If you are in Madrid, I hope you get the chance to stop by these bars and enjoy the best tapas ever!
