You’ve binged watched the show and created an emotional attachment to the characters; now it’s time to turn into them. Luckily, you’re in the perfect location to do so, because you’re not the only one who loves Spain’s beautiful landscapes—the Game of Thrones directors do as well. Spain is the site of many GOT filming locations; check out this list and write down your favorites so you can check them out yourself. Who knows, maybe you’ll even see John Snow…
WARNING: Spoiler Alerts!!! Make sure to catch up on the series before reading (but who am I kidding, you’ve probably been through the series already) (twice).
- Castell de Santa Florentina (Barcelona)
First stop on the list is the home of everyone’s favorite underdog, Samwell Tarly. This 11th century castle will transport you to another world, and make you feel as if you could see a GOT character at any second, as long as it isn’t Joffrey).
- Castle of Zafra (Guadalajara)
This beautiful castle—known as the “Tower of Joy” in the show—was occupied by teenage Ned Stark. Take a weekend trip to this breathtaking site, and try not to cry too much from missing Papa Stark *tears* Hint: the tower lies at an altitude of 1,400 meters, so bring your (comfy) walking shoes!
- Alcazar of Seville (Seville)
If you’re a fan of the show and aren’t continuously amazed by the Water Gardens of Dorne, you’re doing it wrong. Southern Spain’s great climate and sites have proven to be perfect for the series, but don’t let me tell you—head to Andalucía and check it out for yourself.
- Roman Bridge (Córdoba)
…and while you’re in Andalucía, you might as well head over here too. Córdoba’s famous bridge serves as the show’s means of connecting both halves of Volantis. And if that’s not enough to convince you to go, Tyrion Lannister crossed it, so you basically have to too.
- Osuna Bullring (Osuna)
(Another stop on the Andalucían trip, woohoo!) Depicted as the Fighting Pits of Meereen, this site has the perfect eerie and medieval vibes. Come here and see with your own eyes why this bullring was chosen, and so you can pretend to be Daenerys Targaryen, obviously…
Hopefully this list re-sparked your GOT interests. If you’re not ready to dive into these places yet, check out BeMadrid’s Game of Thrones Experience. With us, you’ll be seeing where the show filmed scenes at King’s Landing–we’re talking the capital of the Seven Kingdoms here. Winter is coming, people! Cheers.
