Study Permit + TIE (Visa from Spain)

If you are a non-EU citizen who entered Spain as a tourist and do not hold a student visa, you will need to apply for a Study Permit (Permiso de Estancia por Estudios) and a TIE (Foreigner Identity Card). The study permit must be processed within Spain, and once approved, you will need to apply for your TIE. Please note that the TIE is only issued for stays longer than six months.

The permit can be requested for official academic programs, research or training activities, participation in student mobility programs, non-paid internships or volunteer services.

IMPORTANT: You must submit your study permit application within 30 days of entering Spain, and in any case, before the final 60 days of your legal tourist stay. Additionally, the permit must be requested at least 60 days before the start date of your studies, so planning your arrival is essential.

Once the permit is approved, you must apply for your TIE within 30 days from the notification of the favorable decision.

• Copy of your passport data page (photo)
• The page with the entry stamp to Spain as a tourist,
• Admission letter from the academic institution.

Additional documentation required during the process

• Health insurance certificate with no co-payments or deductibles, including repatriation expenses. If you don’t have it, you can contract it here under the most advantageous conditions.
• Proof of financial means (we’ll guide you on required documents and formats)
• Criminal record certificate from the last 5 years, duly legalized/apostilled
• Medical certificate confirming the applicant does not suffer from diseases with public health implications, according to the 2005 International Health Regulations (also legalized/apostilled)

All documents must be translated into Spanish, and when necessary, notarized, legalized or apostilled. We will advise you on the exact requirements based on your case.
